About

My name is Bryan Winters and I am a Nunatsiavut beneficiary of Inuk and Irish Newfoundland descent from Happy Valley - Goose Bay, Labrador. It was with great honour that I accepted the nomination as a candidate for the position of Ordinary Member of the Nunatsiavut General Assembly representing the Canadian Constituency.

Goal One. Provide a strong, unwavering voice for you in the General Assembly

By listening to your concerns, providing assistance as best I can and communicating the diverse realities facing Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries and their families in the Canadian Constituency.

Goal Two. Commit to a more expansive communications strategy

To ensure beneficiaries outside of Nunatsiavut feel included and up to date on all of the news and business happening at home, as well as everything that relates to us around the country. I will manage this through a combination of social media, an email and snail mail newsletter, in-person visits, and good old fashioned phone calls.

Goal Three. Bring services to you

Make sure that every beneficiary outside of Nunatsiavut is aware of every last benefit available to them, from Nunatsiavut Government programs and services, to local nonprofits and Friendship Centres, with details specific to every urban community and rural region in the provinces and territories.

Goal Four. Collaborate with my peers

Including the other Inuk elected to represent Canada, I will continue to expand upon the excellent work currently being done by other members of the General Assembly and our predecessors in the NG and the Labrador Inuit Association, especially to determine a more effective means of casting ballots in our constituency.

My late father was Wayne “Moose” Winters and his parents were Susan Winters (née Edmunds) and James “Bunny” Winters, from Makkovik by way of Kessessasskiou Street in Happy Valley. My mother is Yvonne Winters (née Crawley) from St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland, who spent her entire teaching career in the Big Land, starting in Nain and ending thirty years later in Goose Bay. I have previously lived in Halifax and Montreal, but I have called Toronto home for the last five years with my partner Camille Georgeson-Usher and our pets Kulu and Wilson.

Through my varied career I have developed an understanding that empathy and positivity are the strongest qualities I bring to my work and those are a result of my family and upbringing, not my CV. It is with this skill set and history that I would be honoured to be considered for this important position within our Inuit self-government’s General Assembly.
